Where have they gone, Wednesdays?? 002 – Push Pop

Push Pop

“Don’t push me, push your push-pop!”

It must have been the ultimate sweet gimmick of our time, including a belt clip on the packaging!

Even though my finger would get stick after re-using the sweet, I loved it anyway. They were sticky but that was part of the fun!!

Alas, it is gone. The first step to ending the Push Pop reign was the introduction of a new and improved (and redesigned) Push Pop to avoid the stickiness. The new Push Pop came in a plastic package, which launched the sweet out of its case when the lid was taken off.  They had completely taken away the PUSH in Push Pop! Not to mention that after you re-opened your Push Pop (from earlier savings), the darn sweet would not come out the case, as the stickiness left the spring unable to launch the sweet.

The flavours also changed to include a more complex varieties, including a raspberry lemonade flavour – so long cherry, grape and apple.

Today, Push Pops are no where to been seen, however they are still listed as an official candy brand through Bazooka Joe Candy. Three more variations to the brand have been included such as Jumbo Push Pop; Push Pop Sliderz and Triple Power Push Pops. The only place they seem to be available however, are online stores, such as Oldtimecandy.comSugarstand.com and Houseofrave.com.

Nevertheless, gone are the days when candy was more than just a sugar rush! I guess children of today will just have to settle for those scarily large buckets of candy sold at Woolworths and Pick n Pay.

I just had to include this last advert, launched in France – the idea of the candy is just so darn cute!
